Jazz Drum Style Deep Dive: Max Roach and Art Blakey – Six-Week Online Class

Please Note: All Listed Classes and Workshops are Pacific Time. This course will be conducted live via video conferencing. A computer or other device with a webcam and microphone and a reliable internet connection is required. Log-in information will be sent to students before the first class meeting!

For this installment of our Jazz Drum Style Deep Dive Series, explore the music, style and techniques of Max Roach and Art Blakey, widely known for their innovative and influential contributions to bop drum language collaborating with Charlie Parker, The Jazz Messengers and countless others. Through listening, discussion and analysis, we’ll draw lessons from their music to be applied to our own development as players.

B.M. in Jazz Performance, University of Miami School of Music (now Frost School of Music); has performed internationally with a wide variety of musicians including Lee Konitz, Gene Perla, Grady Tate, Ira Sullivan, Cuong Vu, Dayna Stephens, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Wil Blades, Vusi Mahlasela, Meklit Hadero, Karl Denson, Stew, Fareed Haque, and many others; longtime member of groups led by Nathan Clevenger, Ian Carey, Adam Shulman, Matthew Charles Heulitt; performs in various configurations with his self-designed electro-acoustic setup, including with the Schimscheimer Family Trio, Jordan Glenn, Rob Ewing, Kasey Knudsen, and Ben Goldberg; has taught classes/ lessons/workshops at the CJC/JCMS, Stanford Jazz Workshop, UC Berkeley, Sonoma State U, Humboldt State U, and many other schools around the U.S. and Europe. www.jonarkin.net
