Jazz Singing Basics – Six-Week Online Class

Please Note: All Listed Classes and Workshops are Pacific Time. This course will be conducted live via video conferencing. A computer or other device with a webcam and microphone and a reliable internet connection is required. Log-in information will be sent to students before the first class meeting!

Learn to sing jazz or improve upon your current ability. We will cover a variety of topics including selecting keys, counting off songs, choosing songs, understanding various rhythmic feels, song form, intros, and endings, ear training exercises, introduction to improvisation, communicating with a jazz rhythm section, phrasing, and interpretation. Singers will learn a few typical jazz songs and be asked to prepare at least one using an accompaniment track with approval from the instructor.

Instructor: Ellen Johnson

Ellen Johnson has devoted over three decades to the arts as a recording artist, educator, songwriter, lyricist, author, and publicist. Johnson has performed with Charles McPherson, Louie Bellson, Bobby McFerrin, Sheila Jordan, Roy McCurdy, Don Braden, Larry Koonse, and John Stowell among others. She is the author of “Jazz Child: Portrait of Sheila Jordan” and has published lyrics to Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus compositions. Johnson holds a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from San Diego State University, serving in the past on the voice faculties of the University of San Diego and Cal Poly University Pomona. She gives master classes, online classes and teaches privately through her Vocal Visions studio. www.ellenjohnson.net
