Kathleen King: Other Lives
May 7 @ 12:00 pm - June 12 @ 6:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 12:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, repeating until June 12, 2021
Kathleen King emphasizes the personal, social, and cultural aspects of collecting and arranging found materials in her exhibition, Other Lives. King explores ideas about value, multiplicity, including the multiple aspects of each person, and the psychological power that objects hold. While comprised of common objects and materials, her work in Other Lives reveals possibilities not found in everyday life. Three sculptures anchor the installation: (Dis)Organized Bodies, two figure-like stacks of plywood cubes filled with found paper detritus; Heart of Glass, a square wood platform supporting a circle of found glass bottles, vases, and jars; and Tree without Roots, a ribbon of tied-together fabric culled from discarded clothing. In addition, a series of paintings made with tape and house paint demonstrate ideas about continuous variation and creative consciousness. The paintings collect intensive marks derived from directional signage or the interweaving of fiber in cloth, among other references. Elements are connected and conjugated, and by overstepping their standard through the amplitude of continuous variation, a persistent, unforeseen, autonomous becoming is invented.
